How to play Underhell — The Infernal Maze

You start in the bottom-left chamber of the maze. Your goal: collect all 6 soul keys and reach the escape portal in the top-right chamber.

Move & Jump

Walk with Left/Right and jump with Space. Jumps are precise: tap for a hop, hold for full height. You can jump through ceiling holes to climb to the chamber above.

Shoot Up & Down

Your weapon only fires vertically. Press Up or Down to aim, then Fire. Stand under flying wisps to shoot up, or jump above ground demons and fire down. Master the vertical kill — it is the heart of the game.

Keys & Gates

Collect the 6 golden keys hidden across the maze. Rune gates auto-open when you carry enough keys: gate A needs 1, B needs 2, C needs 3, D needs 4, F needs 5. Plan routes through open sides and floor holes.

Demons & Generators

Imps patrol floors, hoppers ricochet, wisps drift on sine waves and sentinels hover on vertical paths. Purple skull generators keep spawning wisps — two direct hits destroy one for 200 points. Touch any demon and you lose a life.

Escape

With all 6 keys, reach the swirling portal in the top-right chamber (Depth 6/24). Enter it to win. Your progress saves automatically — return anytime with Continue.

FAQ

Does Underhell save my progress?

Yes. Score, lives, keys collected, gates opened, cleared pickups and destroyed generators are saved in your browser (localStorage). Press Continue on the title screen to resume exactly where you fell.

Why can the hero only shoot up and down?

That is the core of the flip-screen genre the game honors: vertical-only shots make positioning the real skill. You must place yourself above or below each enemy, which turns every room into a spatial puzzle.

Is it playable on mobile?

Yes. A touch D-pad appears automatically on touch devices: Left/Right move, Up/Down aim, A jumps and B fires. The game runs at 60fps on modern mobile browsers.

How long is the game?

A full escape run across the 24-room maze typically takes 20–45 minutes depending on skill. The persistent save lets you complete it across multiple sessions.
